TORONTO - About 500 driving examiners in Ontario remain on strike after walking off the job late Friday afternoon.

United Steelworkers local 9511 says it bargained with the employer, Serco DES, for 56 straight hours before the walkout began.

The strike affected approximately 3,000 aspiring drivers across the province waiting to take a road test.

The 55 DriveTest centres in Ontario conduct tests for new drivers and for motorists aged 80 and over.

The strike doesn't affect drivers who need to renew their licences without taking a test and can do so at provincial issuing offices.

The union says on its web page that pickets will be in place today at DriveTest centres in Brampton, Port Union and in west-end Toronto.
