Mayoral candidate Rob Ford is leading opponent George Smitherman by more than eight points, according to the latest poll released on the race.

The Ekos poll, which had a sample size of 507 and a margin of error of 4.4 per cent, shows Ford to have the support of 43.9 per cent of decided Toronto voters. Smitherman follows with 35.6 per cent and Joe Pantalone has 15 per cent.

About 5.5 per cent of voters are giving their support to candidates other than the top three.

According to Ekos, Smitherman is in the lead among university educated voters, while Ford holds a "very significant advantage with the baby boom and senior voter segment."

Ford is also in the lead among voters not born in Canada.

In CP24's mayoral debate in August, Ford attracted controversy when he suggested Toronto should somehow try to close itself to immigration, which falls under federal jurisdiction.

"We can't even take care of our 2.5 million people," he said. "I think it's important that we take care of the people now before we start bringing in more."
