The northbound lanes of Highway 400 have reopened in Vaughan after a serious crash that sent a 60-year-old Richmond Hill woman to hospital in critical condition, Ontario Provincial Police say.

The northbound lanes had been closed between Major Mackenzie Drive and King Road. The closure lasted approximately four hours.

Southbound traffic was blocked at Teston Road for a brief period to allow an air ambulance to land at the scene, but those lanes were reopened shortly afterwards.

OPP say that a vehicle travelling north hit the centre cement guard rail then traveled across three lanes of traffic before coming to a rest.

The female driver, suffering from head injuries, was airlifted from the scene and transported to a trauma centre in critical condition.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash, which occurred at about 11:30 a.m.
