MISSISSAUGA, Ont. - The feisty 89-year-old mayor of Mississauga, Ont., says she'll seek a 12th term in October's municipal election.
Hazel McCallion says she registered to run today.
Known as Hurricane Hazel, she has served as mayor of the city just west of Toronto since she was first elected to the post in 1978 and has often run unopposed.
In her first term, McCallion oversaw the orderly evacuation of hundreds of thousands of residents after a train carrying toxic chemicals derailed in a fiery explosion in November 1979.
McCallion was born in Port Daniel, Que., where her father operated a fishing and canning company.
McCallion has faced a couple of recent scandals, testifying at an inquiry into land deals involving her son and defusing a flap over the hazing of municipal workers.
