One of the suspects charged in connection with the death of seven-year-old Katelynn Sampson appeared in court via video remote this morning.

Donna Irving, 29, is charged with first degree murder, along with her boyfriend Warren Johnson.

Katelynn's mother, Bernice Sampson, had been friends with Irving for 10 years and had put her daughter in her friend's care while she sorted out some personal problems.

Katelynn was found dead with what police described as obvious signs of trauma in Irving's Parkdale apartment in early August.

The coroner has yet to determine the cause of Katelynn's death. Both Irving and Johnson have been remanded in custody until October 3.
