One man is dead after a shooting in Mississauga on Wednesday.
It happened in the area of Tranmere Drive and Telford Way, near Dixie and Derry roads, shortly before noon.
Peel police said officers located a man in his 40s with obvious signs of trauma.
Despite life-saving measures, the victim died at the hospital, police said.
The homicide unit has taken over the investigation.
Police have not released any information on possible suspects.
When asked about the circumstances that led to the incident and whether it was a drive-by shooting, Peel police spokesperson Const. Michelle Stafford said they do not have that information, as the investigation is in its early stages.
“We are canvassing for any video footage, appealing to the public for any witnesses to come forward and speak with our homicide bureau so that we can gain more information on the circumstances,” Stafford said.
She added that the incident was concerning given that it happened during a busy time of day.
“At this point, we believe this to be an isolated incident, and there’s no threat to public safety,” Stafford said.
While she can’t confirm details at this point, witnesses said the victim was standing outside his truck when he was shot. Some told CTV News that they saw a car approach the man before the shooting.
A witness who was working across the road from the scene told CTV News Toronto that he heard more than a dozen gunshots.
“I was standing at the door, I heard the firing almost 15 to 16 rounds so I just ran out to see what happened,” said the witness, who asked not to be identified for safety reasons. He also recounted seeing someone helping the victim.
The window of a law firm was hit by a bullet. A worker said officers found the bullet behind his chair. He believed that if he was sitting at the time, “maybe I’m not standing here right now.”
