A man is dead following a shooting in downtown Toronto’s Moss Park neighbourhood Wednesday night.
Toronto police said they received reports of a man who had been shot near the intersection of Queen Street East and Sherbourne Street just after 8 p.m.
Speaking to reporters at the scene, Duty Insp. Scott Shutt said officers found a male victim suffering from a serious gunshot wound.
“Officers and paramedics began life-saving measures, and the male was rushed via emergency run to hospital,” Shutt said. According to paramedics, the victim’s injuries were life-threatening.
The victim was subsequently pronounced dead in the hospital. His identity has not been released. When asked if the victim lived in the nearby homeless shelter, Shutt said he did not have that information.
The inspector also could not say how many suspects were involved in the shooting.
“I’m not ready to provide any suspect information at this time,” Shutt said, adding that police do not believe a vehicle was involved.
“Again, it’s still very early in the investigation. We’re still canvassing witnesses and looking for video in the area.”
The homicide unit is now investigating. Shutt said there is no threat to public safety.
“Anytime a shooting happens in the community, it’s very concerning. I would say I don’t believe there’s any threat to the public at this time. The shooter fled the scene, and there’s no indication that they’re around anymore,” he added.
