One person was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries after a head-on crash that has closed a road north of Toronto, York Regional Police say.

Two vehicles crashed on Davis Drive, just east of Highway 48, in East Gwillumbury at about 6 a.m., police said.

Davis Drive is closed between Ninth Line and Centre Street. The closure may last until noon, police said.

Motorists are being asked to avoid the area until Davis Drive reopens.

The male driver of one of the vehicles was transported to Southlake Regional Health Centre by ambulance with serious injuries.

An air ambulance was requested, but it was later cancelled.

A traffic reconstruction team has been called to the scene, meaning the road will be closed for some time as the team conducts an investigation.
