One of Woodbine Avenue's northbound lanes is closed in Markham because of a sinkhole the size of a pickup truck.

The sinkhole opened up late Tuesday night because of a water main break, resulting in all but one of the northbound lanes being closed between Denison and John streets.

Crews have turned off the water supply and will likely spend the entire day repairing the damaged water main and filling the sinkhole, which swallowed the curb lane and part of the boulevard.

York Regional Police said northbound Woodbine Avenue will be reduced to one lane through the post-work commute, so they're urging motorists to avoid the area, if possible.

At one point, all of the northbound lanes were blocked.

Woodbine Avenue's southbound lanes are open.
