TORONTO - Premier Dalton McGuinty says the debate over pools at Toronto schools has gone on long enough.

McGuinty says the Ontario government will provide capital funding to keep the pools open at Toronto schools.

He says the schools are an important resource for students and for the public in the neighbourhood.

McGuinty defends the funding for Toronto school pools, even though no other school boards in Ontario have swimming pools.

He says other partners also have a role to play in helping keep the pools open, including the private sector, the city of Toronto and the school board.

Toronto has 79 pools at schools, but has only 30 city-run indoor pools for its 2.5 million residents, so many public swim programs operate in school pools.
