TORONTO - The Stefanie Rengel murder trial in Toronto is heading into its final stages after defence lawyers chose to call no witnesses today.

That means the fate of the 17-year-old girl on trial for Rengel's death could be in the jury's hands by late Monday or Tuesday.

Closing arguments in the first-degree murder trial begin Monday morning.

The 14-year-old Rengel was stabbed to death on New Year's Day 2008.

The Crown, which closed its case Thursday, alleges the accused pressured her boyfriend into killing Rengel out of obsessive jealousy.

The boyfriend, now 19, is to be tried on a first-degree murder charge in October.
