Impaired driving charges are believed to be pending against a 19-year-old man in a head-on crash that killed a father and daughter on the weekend.

Jayantha Neil Wijeratne, 49, and his 16-year-old daughter Eleesha Nimani Wijeratne were killed when their minivan was struck by a vehicle travelling the wrong direction at the QEW and Highway 427 in Toronto early Sunday morning, Ontario Provincial Police said.

Jayantha Wijeratne’s wife is in Sunnybrook hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police said the family was out celebrating the woman’s 50th birthday.

Police said the crash occurred when the wrong-way vehicle, a GMC Envoy driven by an alleged drunk driver, smashed into the Wijeratne family’s Dodge Caravan on the ramp from the eastbound QEW to northbound Highway 427.

The Envoy was heading south in Highway 427’s northbound lanes, while the Caravan, driven by Jayantha Wijeratne, was exiting the QEW onto the 427.

Officers arrested the Envoy’s driver at the scene. He was transported to St. Michael’s Hospital, where he is receiving treatment for serious injuries.
