Would you let your kid get away with using some of the same excuses we have grown accustom to hearing from Mayor Rob Ford?

That’s the question raised by a new video from a Toronto-based TV director that was posted to YouTube Wednesday morning.

The one-and-a-half minute video features a nine-year-old girl using quotes from Ford’s infamous crack cocaine denial and subsequent admission as she tries to elude punishment from her father for a crack that was left in a living room glass door by an errant soccer ball.

The video concludes with a simple message displayed on a black background that reads “our children are watching.”

“The conversation right now is about money and how ‘I saved you this amount of dollars,’ well so what?” Ron Murphy, the creator of the video, told CP24.com on Wednesday afternoon. “What if your kid is now buying this or that drug at school because it has been sanctioned by one of our leaders? Whether we like it or not our leaders are role models so I am just asking what kind of role model he is. The answer may be ‘Yeah I think he is a great role model, I would love it if my kid was like him’ and if that is the answer than fine that’s the world we live in but we should at least have the conversation.”

Murphy, who has worked on The Trailer Park Boys and Lost Girl, produced the video in his living room with the help of three friends who work in the industry and were willing to help out for about $100 in free food.

A local firm then provided some post-production work for free because they “liked the message” and as of 5 p.m. the professional quality video had been viewed more than 17,000 times and was being widely shared on social media.

“I have gotten hundreds and hundreds of comments and many people are saying that it is disturbing how well this dialogue fits in the mouth of a nine-year-old,” Murphy, who does not have any kids of his own but nonetheless wanted to speak with parents, told CP24.com. “It actually makes perfect sense coming from a little nine year old with some attitude. That’s the sad part about it I guess. If you don’t laugh you will cry.”
