VAUGHAN, Ont. -- A pair of Conservative candidates say a Liberal government would be soft on crime and ruin the economy.

At a news conference today in the Toronto-area, Julian Fantino responded to Justin Trudeau's pledge to repeal mandatory prison sentences for serious offences.

Fantino says violent criminals should remain locked up to protect the public.

Fantino says the evidence shows that mandatory prison sentences work at keeping criminals in prison longer, and help keep streets and communities safer.

Tony Clement joined Fantino to draw attention to the Liberal party's costing document released yesterday, which the Conservatives claim will be achieved by raising taxes by 6.5 billion dollars.

Clement says the Liberal plan would raise taxes, and plunge Canada back into permanent deficits and destabilize the country's fragile economy.

And he suggested seniors should hang onto their wallets if the Liberals form the next government.
