Toronto Fire crews battled a large fire at a scrapyard in the city’s west end on Sunday morning.

Speaking to CP24, Toronto Fire Capt. David Eckerman said officials received multiple calls shortly before 8 a.m. about heavy black smoke in the area of Weston Road and Keele Street.

A fire was then discovered at Stark Auto, located on Union Street.

When crews arrived on scene, Eckerman said firefighters were held up by guard dogs that were monitoring the property.

Once staff at the facility removed the dogs and crews were able to get access to water, the fire was under control in about 10 or 15 minutes.

Crews remained on scene to battle hotspots.

At the height of the fire, about 12 vehicles were engulfed in flames.

In is unclear what caused the fire but Toronto Fire says it is possible that one of the vehicles in the scrapyard had an electrical issue.

No injuries have been reported.
