A former Liberal MP and current Mississauga councillor has officially entered the race to replace long-time mayor Hazel McCallion.

Bonnie Crombie filed her paperwork at Mississauga city hall Tuesday morning, becoming the fourth candidate to put their name on the ballot for the October vote.

Other declared candidates include former MPP and MP Steve Mahoney and political newcomers Scott Chapman and Riazuddin Choudhry.

“Mississauga is a fantastic place to live, to work and raise your kids and I am going to make it even better,” Crombie said in an interview with CP24 on Tuesday afternoon. “I have a bold vision, I have strong leadership skills and I have the energy, the passion and the drive for a bright new future.”

Crombie was the Mississauga-Streetsville MP from 2008 to 2011.

She was then elected to Mississauga city council in a by-election, following her defeat in the 2011 federal election.

Speaking with CP24 on Tuesday, Crombie listed addressing gridlock and the infrastructure deficit as her main priorities.

“We have grown out and now we have to grow up but we have to grow up responsibly where it makes sense,” she said.

McCallion, 93, has been Mississauga’s mayor since 1978 but will not be running for re-election in October.
