An effort to find animals to fill the city's soon-to-be aquarium is sparking protest.

An online petition has been started by animal activists, who are angry at the methods Ripley's Entertainment is reportedly using to catch sand tiger sharks off the coast of South Carolina.

The sharks are destined for Ripley's new Toronto aquarium, which is set to open at the base of the CN Tower in 2013.

The petition, addressed to city council, has a goal of 10,000 signatures. As of Tuesday morning, more than 1,000 names have been added to it.
