Residents of Burlington are being encouraged to stay put Monday night after extensive rainfall flooded several of the city's roads and homes.

Many roadways were closed Monday night including the westbound lanes of Highway 407 at Appleby Line, the 403 eastbound ramp to the 407 and the QEW at Guelph Line.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said there were even reports of water up to the rooftops of some cars.

"This is an extreme weather event," he said.

Go Transit temporarily suspended its Hamilton QEW Express bus service due to flooding.

The City of Burlington issued a press release late Monday night asking residents to stay at home if possible.

“With this much rain in a very short time, a number of families will be impacted. Please be prepared to help your neighbours in need," City of Burlington spokesperson Kim Phillips said.

Burlington Fire's deputy chief Jeff Weber told CP24 that emergency services were inundated with calls from residents.

"(Calls) ranging from anything from flooded basements and worrying about potential overloads of sump pumps and things like that to a major gas main leak that was washed out in the upper portion of Burlington," Weber said.

"We’ve got a number of active calls on at any one time and we are slowly dwindling those down now to just calls for service and calls for assistance."
