TTC Chair Karen Stintz says she will run against Rob Ford to become mayor of Toronto in 2014.

In a phone call late Saturday, Stintz confirmed to cp24.com she plans to run.

“I’m assembling a campaign team because I believe that elections are about choice and I want to be able to offer a choice to the people of Toronto,” Stintz told the Toronto Sun in an interview published Saturday night.

Often touted in the media as a possible alternative to Ford, Stintz has gained a higher profile at city hall since Ford appointed her TTC Chair in 2010.

Since that time, the outspoken midtown councilor has frequently butted heads with the mayor, most notably over the issue of whether to build subways or light rail lines in the city.

Other possible high profile candidates include MP Olivia Chow and former Progressive Conservative leader John Tory.

Stintz is the first high-profile candidate to throw her hat in the ring.

Stintz has represented Ward 16 since 2003.
