A 27-year-old man was pronounced dead on scene after a shooting outside a downtown hotel that is located just steps away from the Eaton Centre.

It happened in front of the Toronto Marriott Downtown Eaton Centre Hotel on Bay Street south of Dundas Street at around 2:45 a.m.

Witnesses at the scene tell CP24 that as many as seven shots rang out at the time of the shooting.

Police have not made any arrests and are appealing to anyone with information to come forward. Officers are also going door-to-door inside the hotel in the hopes of locating possible witnesses before they check out.

The victim has been identified as Kabil Abdulkhadir.

“There have been some witnesses that have come forward but I know that we have just scratched the surface of the witness pool,” Det. Sgt. Joyce Schertzer told reporters at the crime scene late Sunday morning. “I recognize that it was the early hours of Sunday morning but it was a beautiful night and people were out enjoying the City of Toronto.”

Schertzer would not disclose how many shots were discharged or whether there was an exchange of gunfire.

The detective also said it is unclear whether the suspect ran into the hotel or fled elsewhere.

Earlier on Saturday one guest at the hotel told CP24 that he saw a number of Emergency Task Force officers staked outside a room and heard them yelling “come out with your hands up.”

“We haven’t confirmed direction of travel and we haven’t confirmed any real concrete suspect description,” Schertzer said. "There is a great deal of people to speak to, video and a lot of area to cover."

Guests of the hotel are allowed to leave the property but are not allowed to return.

Meanwhile, cars parked at the Marriott cannot be taken away from the hotel until further notice.

Bay Street was closed between Dundas Street and Queen Street but reopened at around 1:30 p.m.

"It is really early on in the investigation and I don't like to give myself a timeline but we are advancing and we are going where the evidence leads us," Schertzer said.
