A Mississauga mother is facing a second-degree murder charge in the death of her two-year-old daughter, Peel Regional Police announced Wednesday.

Teres Amelia Williams, 24, was taken into police custody after Evadne Williams-Scott was found dead in a townhouse suite on Colonial Drive, near The Collegeway and Burnhamthorpe Road, on Tuesday afternoon.

When police were called to the building, they encountered a hysterical woman, who was not wearing shoes or socks, on a balcony, said acting Insp. Randy Cowan.

The woman barricaded herself inside the suite, but officers soon gained entry and discovered the victim.

Due to the woman's "heightened state of hysteria," Cowan said, officers were forced to Taser her to bring her under control during the arrest.

An autopsy is scheduled to confirm the cause of death, but Cowan said the girl, who would have turned three years old this March, suffered "obvious signs of trauma."

The woman is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday afternoon.
