One man is dead following a shooting in downtown Toronto, police have confirmed.

It happened in the area of Shuter and Trefann streets, in the Queen and Parliament streets area, at around 2:45 p.m.

Police said the victim - believed to be 18 years old - was found in an alleyway with multiple gunshots wounds.

His name has not been released.

“There was an altercation between approximately four males, that’s the information we’re getting right now,” Toronto police Sgt. Corey Crawford said at the scene.

A number of local schools were placed under hold-and-secure orders following the shooting.

Though police do not believe the suspects are still in the immediate vicinity, residents are still being urged to exercise caution.

Police continue to investigate at the scene.
