Police say a man found without vital signs on the side of the road in Markham on Monday has been identified as 50-year-old Toronto resident Kong Wu Wang.

According to police, at around 5:40 a.m., a motorist was driving in the area of Old Kennedy Road and Steeles Avenue when he spotted a body near the edge of the roadway and notified police.

When emergency crews arrived on scene, police found Wang without vital signs.

He was rushed to a Toronto trauma centre, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police confirmed Wednesday that Wang sustained a fatal gunshot wound.

York Regional Police’s homicide unit is leading the investigation but have not yet released any information on possible suspects.

Speaking to reporters Monday, Const. Andy Pattenden said police are currently searching for surveillance video in the area.

“Right now, I can see there is at least one video surveillance camera here,” he said.

“We do know a lot of people have dash cams in their cars in this area.”

Police ask anyone with information about the investigation to contact the homicide unit at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7865.
