Durham Regional Police are investigating a serious crash in Clarington that sent five people to hospital on Tuesday.

According to police, at around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, a blue GMC Terrain was travelling westbound on Taunton Road near Darlington Clarke Townline Road when it crashed head-on with an eastbound black Dodge Ram pickup truck.

Police say the 69-year-old female driver of the GMC sustained life-threatening injuries and a 16-year-old male passenger was also seriously injured. They were both airlifted to a Toronto-area trauma centre, where they remain in serious but stable condition.

A 14-year-old female passenger of the GMC was taken to a local hospital but was later transferred to Sick Kids Hospital.

The 66-year-old driver of the pickup truck and his 59-year-old passenger were also treated in hospital for minor injuries.
