A Toronto police officer is charged with assault with a weapon following an investigation into an incident in December 2013 that left a 24-year-old man injured.

The director of Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Tony Loparco, says he has reasonable grounds to charge a police constable with a criminal offence in connection to the 2013 incident, according to an SIU statement released Friday. He did not specify what those grounds were.

The young man, who was not identified by the SIU, was reportedly assaulted on December 12, 2013 when several police officers took him into custody in the Woodbine Avenue and Danforth Avenue area.

A suspect identified as Jason Nanton is expected in court next month.
