SUDBURY, Ont. -- High schools in Sudbury, Ont. will be on strike Monday, as negotiations between teachers and the Rainbow District School Board have failed to reach an agreement.
Rainbow District is the second district affected by strike action -- last Monday high school teachers in Durham Region hit the picket lines.
The Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation released a statement saying the board's "refusal to engage in real negotiations" has left teachers with "no option."
A statement from Rainbow District School Board Chair Doreen Dewar says she is "extremely disappointed" with the decision to strike.
She says secondary schools will be shut down in the district on Monday.
She says the OSSTF advised the board through a mediator the union did not see any possibility of progress or a settlement and that time would be better spent preparing for the strike.
Dewar says the board believed progress was possible but that the union "did not come back to the table to respond," which shut the door on any opportunity of moving forward.
