The province's Special Investigations Unit has been called in after a shooting at Queen Subway Station Friday night, Toronto police say.

The incident happened around 8 p.m. Toronto EMS say they received an initial report about a male shot on the subway platform.

Paramedics arrived and found one man in his 20s suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries, EMS says.

Police confirmed there had been a shooting but could not immediately provide more details.

In a news release issued late Friday, the SIU said police were investigating a man on a subway car before he was shot.

Witnesses at the scene told CP24 they heard as many as 10 to 14 shots fired.

The man is now in hospital in stable condition, the SIU said in its release.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency called in to investigate whenever police are involved in an incident resulting in a death or serious injury.

Most operations at Eaton Centre did not appear to have been affected by the shooting, with many people continuing to shop as police closed off the entrance to the subway.

Subway service was shut down between Union and Bloor stations on the Yonge-University-Spadina Line for an investigation following the shooting, but full service resumed at around 1:45 p.m. Saturday.
