A tentative agreement has been reached between York University and the union representing some 3,700 striking teaching assistants, contract faculty and graduate students.

The deal was reached late Friday night with the help of a provincial mediator, the union said in a release late Friday.

“CUPE 3903 staff and legal counsel are currently finalizing the details of the Terms of Settlement, which will be made widely available to the members before the ratification meeting,” the union said on its website.

The striking workers at the university have been off the job since Tuesday after 71 per cent voted to reject a contract offer put to them by the university. The dispute has revolved mainly around wages and job security.

Union members will now hold a ratification vote on the deal Monday evening. If a simple majority of members in each unit accept the deal, workers could be back on the job by Tuesday. If not, the strike would continue.

The union said picketing will continue Monday as planned at York.

Though classes have been cancelled for thousands of students as a result of the strike, university facilities such as libraries and offices have remained open.

About 6,000 teaching assistants, course instructors and other staff are also on strike at the University of Toronto. However classes there have not been cancelled.
