A driver narrowly escaped harm after a chunk of concrete once again fell from the aging Gardiner Expressway, damaging his windshield.

Police have closed off two lanes on Lake Shore Boulevard at Yonge Street where the incident occurred.

City engineers are on their way to the site to examine the structure.

Const. Tony Vella said police will hold the scene for several hours until city staff can make sure it is safe for motorists.

"It's up to the city to investigate," he said.

John Pandell, the driver of the Mercedes that was hit Monday morning, said when the concrete hit his car, it sounded "like a gunshot or an explosion."

Pieces of concrete hit several parts of the car, making small dents on the vehicle's roof.

Pandell said he was driving along Lake Shore Blvd. on his way to work but next time, he may consider taking an alternate route.

"It definitely makes you think twice about it. You think about it but once it actually happens to you, you don't realize how frequently it happens," he told CP24.

Several pieces of concrete have fallen from the highway in recent months. This is the first time a vehicle has been hit.

No personal injuries have ever been reported.
