OSHAWA, Ont. -- A 20-year-old man is facing charges after a vehicle parked on an Oshawa street was struck several times with a machete while people sat inside.

Police say officers were called to the scene of a disturbance Sunday on Wadebridge Crescent after a man was seen wielding a machete towards a parked vehicle with three occupants.

It's alleged the vehicle was struck several times, causing significant damage including a slashed tire.

The occupants of the vehicle were not injured and the suspect fled before police arrived, but he was arrested a short while later at a nearby plaza.

Police say they do not believe the incident was a random act.

Patrick Rooney of Oshawa is charged with possessing a weapon dangerous to the public peace and property damage under $5,000.
