Cancer research got a big financial boost on Sunday as thousands of people across the country took part in Terry Fox Run events.

Participants walked, ran, cycled or roller skated their way along various routes, raising money for cancer research in Fox's name.

Terry Fox Runs around the world have raised more than $400 million dollars over the years. All of the money raised today goes to the Terry Fox Foundation.

Fox was unable to complete his cross-country Marathon of Hope back in 1980, when the cancer that claimed his leg spread to his lungs. He died the following year. Now, 28 years after his death, he remains an inspiration to millions.

It's not just the Terry Fox Runs that filled the streets on Sunday.

Among the other high-profile fundraisers that took place were the annual Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life at Church and Carlton Streets and the Weekend to End Breast Cancer, which wrapped up in the afternoon with thousands of walkers doing the second leg of a 60-kilometre trek to Exhibition Place from Downsview.
