Alcohol and extreme speed are suspected in a horrific crash that left a young man dead and a second in police custody early Tuesday morning, Toronto police say.

A sport utility vehicle was torn in half, scattering debris all over the road, and a passenger was killed when the vehicle crashed into a pole on Mount Pleasant Road, at Stibbard Avenue, at about 2:35 a.m.

The passenger has been identified as 24-year-old David Chiang.

After the crash, officers arrested vehicle's 19-year-old male driver at the scene. The driver, who was seen crying before he was placed in a police cruiser, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said Oliver Karafa, of Toronto, is charged with impaired driving causing death, criminal negligence causing death and dangerous driving causing death.

The Range Rover was travelling south along an S-curve at high speed when it veered off the road and struck a pole at the southwest corner of the intersection.

The crash created a large field of debris, with pieces of the demolished vehicle being hurled almost a block away.

Toronto police Const. Clint Stibbe told CP24 the driver and passenger were the vehicle's lone occupants.

Mount Pleasant Road reopened between Blythwood Road and Sherwood Avenue, north of Eglinton Avenue East, at 11:30 a.m. The road was closed for hours to allow police to conduct an investigation at the scene.
