Toronto police have made a public appeal for information as they investigate the city's latest homicide.

Paul Fitzgerald Benn, 38, was fatally shot on Cather Crescent, in the Allen Road and Ranee Avenue area, at around 7 p.m. Friday.

According to Det. Sgt. Frank Skubic, Benn had just left his home when he was shot "multiple times" while walking through a clearing.

He was rushed to hospital, but succumbed to his injuries a short time later.

Forensic investigators are now combing the scene for "cartridge cases" and other clues, Skubic said.

Investigators are also going door to door in the hopes that someone in the neighbourhood saw something.

"There were a number of people out and about in this community and while we have received some information and a good amount of cooperation I am certain that there are other witnesses out there who can provide more information about what happened here," Skubic told reporters Saturday afternoon. "We are appealing to anyone in the community who saw a person or was even just in this area to come forward to us and speak about what their observations were."

Skubic said police have had some dealings with Benn in the past, but he did not elaborate on the exact nature of those dealings.

He said police did speak with Benn's family, who he described as "visibly distraught" upon hearing the news.

"They have asked for some private time to consider what has happened to him," he said.

Still no suspect description

Though police have not released any suspect information at this point, Skubic said police have "some descriptions of persons" that they hope to firm up through several interviews with witnesses planned for Saturday afternoon.

He said police also believe that there were four vehicles and a number of people in the immediate area of the shooting who have not yet come forward.

"We are interested in identifying those people," he said.
