Toronto police are searching for a 17-year-old boy in connection with the murder of Jaivoan Cromwell.

Cromwell, 19, was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in front of a building on Woolner Avenue, near Jane Street and St. Clair Avenue, at around 10:30 p.m. last Thursday.

He was rushed to hospital, but succumbed to his injuries a short time later.

The suspect, who can't be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is wanted for second-degree murder in his death.

Police say the suspect, who is from the Jane Street and St. Clair Avenue area, should be considered armed and dangerous.

The suspect is described as black, about five-foot-seven, between 160 and 170 pounds with his hair in cornrows.

Banks said the suspect is known to police, but dismissed suggestions the murder may have been gang related.

"We are still working on what the motive was, but there is no indication that this has anything to do with a gang related type murder," he said.

During Thursday's press conference Banks thanked the community at large for providing the information needed to identify the young suspect.

"We have had excellent cooperation with the public and the businesses in the Woolner (Avenue) area," he said. "They have supplied us with great information and without their cooperation this investigation may not have come to a conclusion as quickly as it did."
