Yes. It really was that hot in Toronto today.

The temperature at Pearson International Airport hit 34.6 C Wednesday afternoon, breaking the record for the hottest temperature recorded for June 20.

The old record of 34.4 C was set in 1949.

A smog alert continues to be in place for most of southern Ontario as temperatures continue to sit at uncomfortably high levels.

Toronto also continues to be under an extreme heat alert. The city's medical officer of health issued the warning Wednesday morning, upgrading the heat alert issued Tuesday.

Summer officially began tonight at 7:09 p.m. ET, but for many residents sweltering in a heat wave baking southern areas of Ontario and Quebec, it already feels like mid-summer.

Environment Canada has issued a humidex advisory for a large section of both provinces due to hot and humid air blowing in from the U.S.

Environment Canada is advising the elderly and people with chronic illnesses to take it easy during the heat wave.

As for the rest of the week, some relief is in sight.

While the temperature is expected to remain high on Thursday, with a predicted daytime high of 33 C, temperatures will drop slightly heading into the weekend.

Temperatures for Friday, Saturday and Sunday are expected to be 26 C, 25 C and 26 C, respectively.
