A Conservative senator is proposing a Canada geese cull in which nuisance birds are shot and fed to the poor.

Toronto-based Senator Nancy Ruth made the comments to the senate finance committee on Tuesday after noting her frustration with the goose droppings near her summer home in cottage country.

Calling the Canada goose a health hazard, Ruth told officials from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency she was happy to hear that rules were in place that may permit her to shoot the geese on her cottage property.

Ruth said she brought up the issue at that particular meeting because she did not know which government department would be appropriate to handle her concerns.
