A Brampton woman has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the disappearance of her sister-in-law Poonam Litt.

Litt's remains were discovered on Feb. 22, 2012, three years after she disappeared from her Brampton home in 2009. At a news conference on Thursday, Peel police confirmed that human remains found in Caledon indeed belonged to the missing woman.

On Friday afternoon, police announced Mandeep Punia, 35, had been arrested and charged along with her father Kulwant Litt, 63. He is charged with accessory after the fact to murder. He made his first court appearance on Friday.

Punia is scheduled to make her first court appearance in Brampton on Saturday.

Poonam Litt, a mother of a young girl, was 27 when she vanished in February 2009. Her family claimed she handed off her baby to relatives and left home for work, but she never arrived. Investigators found it odd because she left her purse, knapsack, identification and other personal belongings behind, except for her cellphone.

Her husband was in India at the time.

Police say they believe Litt was actually killed on Feb. 4, 2009, a day before she was reported missing.
