Ontario's Special Investigations Unit is investigating the death of a man who plunged from the 21st floor of a Scarborough condo late Wednesday night.

Pardeep Singh Mann fell from a balcony at a building on Town Centre Court while attempting to flee Toronto police officers shortly before midnight.

Mann landed on a ninth-floor balcony and was pronounced dead at the scene.

It's not known why the man was attempting to flee police.

The SIU said Toronto police officers were speaking to a 31-year-old man on the 21st floor when a neighbour reported someone was trying to get into his or her suite.

Police entered the neighbouring suite, and at some point the man plunged from the balcony.

Because the SIU is investigating the circumstances of the fall, police declined to comment on the matter.

The man's name hasn't been released.

A total of four officers have been assigned to the investigation.

Anyone who may have witnessed this incident is asked to contact the lead investigator at (416) 622-2038 or 1-800-787-8529 extension 2038.
