Andy Byford has been appointed chief general manager of the Toronto Transit Commission, a city council source confirmed to CP24 Monday night.

Byford previously served as chief operating officer for Rail Corporation New South Wales, as well as holding several positions with transit operators in the United Kingdom, including the London Underground.

He succeeds Gary Webster, who was fired on Feb. 21 because of his support for light-rail transit rather than Mayor Rob Ford's vision for subway-focused transit expansion.

Byford has served as the TTC's chief operating officer since November.
