TORONTO - William Nylander had a pair of goals and Richard Panik chipped in with four assists as the Toronto Marlies downed the visiting Grand Rapids Griffins 6-1 on Friday in American Hockey League play.

Josh Leivo scored once and set up two more for the Marlies (6-3-0) while T.J. Brennan and Brendan Leipsic added a goal and an assist apiece. Ryan Rupert scored once and Matt Frattin tacked on two helpers to round out the offence.

Andreas Athanasiou kept the Griffins (1-6-0) from getting blanked with a goal in the third period after Toronto had built up a 4-0 lead.

Garret Sparks made 38 saves to pick up the win for the Maple Leafs' AHL affiliate as Jared Coreau turned away 28-of-34 shots for Detroit's farm club.

Griffins forward Tyler Bertuzzi was handed a match penalty for slew-footing Marlies winger Kasperi Kapanen while Toronto forward Sam Carrick picked up a game misconduct for abuse of the official. Both infractions came at 18:45 of the third.

Toronto went 2 for 9 on the power play while Grand Rapids scored once on seven chances with the man advantage.
