The Technical Standards and Safety Authority has suspended the licenses of three Sunrise Propane facilities across the GTA in the wake of the Aug. 10 explosion at the company's Downsview location.

The TSSA, which regulates such facilities, suspended the licenses of the three Sunrise locations on Thursday evening, says the agency's Dave Lisle.

They include the Murray Road location of the massive blast and fire earlier this month, as well as sites located at 1201 Dundas Street East in Toronto and 3171 Derry Road East in Mississauga.

Sunrise Propane license holders at these sites were served with a formal "notice of the director's proposal" to revoke their licences to operate propane filling stations. The action results in the immediate shutdown of operations.

The sites could be closed for good, barring any successful appeals by the company owners. They were closed due to issues relating to the operation of the facilities, says Lisle, adding they will be "sealed and secured" to ensure safety.

Earlier today, the regulators ordering five other facilities to close, including a Toronto site on Kingston Road near Lawrence Avenue.

The TSSA has also ordered propane sites to be closed in Kitchener, Waterloo, Cornwall and Ottawa.

It says the closures were ordered after the facilities failed to demonstrate that their employees are properly trained.

Regulators are conducting an extensive audit of about 150 sites similar to that of Sunrise Propane -- the location of the August 10 blast.

Close to 12,000 residents were displaced after the explosion.
