Toronto is one step closer to dedicating a park to a police officer who was slain in the line of duty last month.

City council has asked staff at city hall to study the renaming effort and come back with a report outlining the cost and best course of action.

It's believed the report will be ready in at least a month.

The motion to rename Dupont Parkette was first proposed by Ward 20 Coun. Adam Vaughan. If passed, the parkette would become Sgt. Ryan Russell Park.

The park is located near the spot where Russell was struck and killed by a stolen snowplow in January.
