Members of the Toronto Transit Commission have voted in favour of preparing to move to a new headquarters on Thursday.

The office building at 40-50 Yonge Street near York Mills Road would be built and owned by Build Toronto -- the city's economic development arm.

The TTC says it needs more space for staff, plus the current headquarters at Yonge Street and Davisville Avenue needs millions of dollars in spending.

TTC chair Adam Giambrone says a review shows there are opportunities to save money and become more efficient by moving staff into one larger building.

Giambrone says the TTC will only move if the economic case clearly shows cost savings.

On Wednesday, mayoral candidate George Smitherman came out swinging against TTC plans to open what he called a "gleaming new headquarters."

He said plans for the vote were kept "secret" until 24 hours prior to the event. A supporter of the Transit City plan, Smitherman said he'd like to see any extra money go into service and station improvements instead.

The current TTC headquarters, above Davisville station, opened in 1957.
