MONTREAL - McGill ranks first among Canadian schools and 17th overall in the latest QS World University Rankings.

The Montreal institution has placed in the top 25 in the survey for the past eight years.

McGill's principal and vice-chancellor Heather Munroe-Blum says the result reflects the university's contributions in teaching and research across a broad range of academic fields.

The University of Toronto came in at No. 23, while the University of British Columbia ranked No. 51.

The University of Cambridge in England retained the No. 1 spot in the ranking, ahead of Harvard.

The QS World University Rankings was launched in 2004 and is considered among the most respected in the field.
