After days of freezing cold, the temperature is poised to climb a few degrees above zero later this week but the mild weather may bring December rain.

Meteorologists say there is a chance of more flurries Wednesday, along with a daytime high of -2 C, before the temperature rises to 3 C on Thursday afternoon. That's when Toronto may see rain.

Periods of snow or rain are possible Friday when the temperature hits 1 C and more snow is possible over the weekend.

Earlier Tuesday, the GTA was hit with an Alberta clipper that dumped a few centimetres of snow, slowed down the morning commute and left roads and sidewalks a slushy mess.

Environment Canada predicted five centimetres of snow along Lake Ontario's shore and two centimetres further inland but said it was possible that some parts of the GTA would receive as much as 10 centimetres.

Police are urging motorists to take it easy on the roads and prepare for a slow commute.

During Tuesday morning's commute, a car veered off the road and knocked over a fire hydrant at King and Jarvis streets, partially flooding the intersection. The driver told CP24 his car began to slide as he tried to stop at a red light.

Police urged drivers to slow down, leave plenty of room between vehicles and give themselves extra time to arrive at their destination.

Air travellers were asked to confirm their flight status before heading to the airport because some carriers, including Air Canada and Porter Airlines, issued travel advisories.

An extreme cold weather alert issued by Toronto Public Health was cancelled Tuesday morning. The alert was issued as a way to mobilize services for homeless people who were looking for a warm place to stay.
