The city is warning people to stay away from creeks, streams and ponds because rapidly-changing weather conditions will create some dangers around them.

Rain and melting snow will cause water levels to rise and fall quickly, while the precipitation can cause slippery surfaces along the water's edge.

As a result, Toronto Fire Services is telling people to stay at least three metres from the edge of a waterway during rainy weather.

People should keep their children and pets away from shorelines or thin ice.

Anyone who is going out for a walk should notify a spouse, family member or friend of the route and return time, the city says.

If a person or pet enters a waterway or breaks through thin ice, people should call 911 immediately instead of attempting to rescue the person and putting themselves in danger, the city says.
