The WinterCity Festival kicks off in Toronto this weekend, with concerts, food and other special events planned to pull city residents out of their winter doldrums.

The event features a mixture of indoor and outdoor events, including free entertainment, ice skating, cooking classes, poetry readings and the ever-popular Winterlicious event, in which restaurants across the city offer fixed meals at a discounted rate.

On Friday night, the event kicks off with events including comedy at Nathan Phillips Square and a concert at the Steam Whistle Brewery. Saturday's night's main event features a sure-to-be-lively performance by electro-rap duo Thunderheist and MC Shad, at Nathan Phillips at 8 p.m.

Plans for the massive event, which attracted 500,000 people last year, began in September, city program manager Carole Boughannam tells CP24.

An incarnation of the winter festival has been happening in Toronto for the past 23 years. This year's festivities continue until Feb. 12.
