Waterloo police have a suspect in custody on Tuesday after a woman who was pulled over for speeding stole an officer's police car.

The off-duty officers from Guelph and Peel pulled over the woman's car in Kitchener at mid-day on Monday. After determining the car she was driving in had been stolen, they put her in handcuffs and placed her in the back of their cruiser.

Before they could drive off, the woman escaped the cuffs and the cruiser, jumping behind the wheels of an unattended police car that was stopped nearby.

Police followed the stolen cruiser down King Street and onto the westbound lanes of Highway 401. She eventually lost control of the vehicle, crossed four lanes of traffic and crashed through a guardrail, ending up in the ditch beside the eastbound lanes.

The police car sustained significant damages, but no one was injured.
