Canada's first youth to be sentenced as an adult is being transferred to a federal prison.

Justin Morton was 14 years old when he was convicted of first-degree murder under the Youth Criminal Justice Act in April of 2003. Morton used his own belt to strangle his classmate Eric Levack in a wooded area near their Brampton School.

Levack was strangled on the same day the Act was signed into law.

On Thursday, a judge decided Morton -- who is now 20 years old -- should be moved from a youth detention centre to a federal institution, much to the relief of the Levack family.

Morton has been diagnosed with having homicidal fantasies. He remains eligible for full parole in less than two years and -- starting next month -- will be able to apply for day parole.
