NDP Leader Jack Layton has died after losing a second battle with cancer.

There's been an overwhelming outpouring of support from both the public and those who had the chance to know him personally.

Here's what some of them had to say:

"He'll be remembered for the force of his personality, as a man of strong principles." - Prime Minister Stephen Harper

"He never let the job go to his head. He was very humble, not conceited or arrogant. I thank him for what he taught me." -Toronto Mayor Rob Ford

"Jack was one of the first major open supporters of the gay community. He always pushed the platform that all people have the right to be treated fairly and equally." - former coun. Kyle Rae

"He was trustworthy like his dad and that's what was conveyed to the Canadian people. He transformed the NDP into a true national party." - former PM Brian Mulroney

"He never held a grudge. He never let disagreements get in the way of friendships. He was a generous, loving person." - political activist Judy Rebick

"Mr. Layton showed tremendous class and quality with his determination to go ahead despite the news. He never complained. He just saw it as a twist of fate he would have to deal with." - Liberal interim leader Bob Rae
